Getting around

In town: on foot

Zaječar is compact. The main square, the National Museum, the Radul-beg konak, the cathedral and the pedestrian zone all sit within a few minutes of each other. The Timok riverside is a quarter of an hour north; Kraljevica hill a good half-hour south with a moderate climb. No car required.

Bus and taxi

A town and suburban bus network links Zaječar to the surrounding villages, including Gamzigrad and Gamzigradska Banja. Timetables are built around commuters and schools, not day trippers: if you plan to return in the afternoon, check the last departure first. Taxis are comparatively cheap and a workable alternative for single trips out of town – agree the fare beforehand.

Hire car

For the region there is barely a way around it. The worthwhile destinations lie between eleven and a good hundred kilometres apart, and neither Rajac nor Lazar's Cave is sensibly reachable by bus. Most people pick up a car at Niš or Belgrade airport; the choice in Zaječar itself is small.
