The Danube in Đerdap National Park at the Iron Gates

110 km from Zaječar

Đerdap and the Danube

The Iron Gates to the north – the longest day trip from Zaječar, and the most rewarding.

Around two hours' drive north of Zaječar, via Negotin and Kladovo, you reach the Danube and Đerdap National Park. This is the Iron Gates, the deepest and narrowest point where the Danube breaks through the Carpathians.

The park has been protected since 1974 and a UNESCO Global Geopark since 2020. For a day trip from Zaječar, combine the Kazan gorge, the Miroč viewpoints and Golubac Fortress – though Golubac sits at the western end and makes for a long day.
